The Publication
This publication presents monthly information on sales of new motor vehicles in each state/territory in original, seasonally adjusted and trend estimated terms. The original data are sourced from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries. Sales data are available for passenger vehicles, sports utility vehicles (SUVs), other vehicles and total vehicles at the state/territory and national levels.
JULY 2006 KEY POINTS
Trend
Trend estimates continue in decline since March 2005. The July 2006 trend estimate for total sales of new motor vehicles (79,467) decreased 0.1% compared with the June 2006 estimate.
The only category to record a decrease (0.7%) from June 2006 to July 2006 was the 'other vehicles'. Over the same period, sports utility vehicles increased 0.3% with no change recorded for passenger vehicles.
For sports utility vehicles, trend estimates had been decreasing since October 2005 but showed a slight increase for July 2006. The downward trend of passenger vehicles has been arrested, with the last two months remaining stable.
Western Australia and Queensland were the only states or territories to show an increase in their trend estimate from June 2006 to July 2006, increasing 1.4% and 0.5% respectively.
Seasonally adjusted
The July 2006 seasonally adjusted estimate for total sales of new motor vehicles (80,771) increased 2.6% compared to the June 2006 estimate.
Five states and territories increased during this period. They were Western Australia, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and New South Wales with increases of 5.6%, 4.4%, 3.1%, 2.2% and 1.3% respectively. Tasmania had the largest decrease with 12.1%.
Over this period, sports utility vehicles were the only vehicle type to decrease (down 0.9%). Passenger vehicles increased 3.2% and other vehicles 4.0%.

TREND REVISIONS
Trend estimates are likely to be revised when new seasonally adjusted estimates become available. For further information, see Explanatory Notes, paragraphs 11 and 12.
The graph below presents the effect of two possible scenarios on the previous trend estimates.
1 | The August 2006 seasonally adjusted estimate of total vehicle sales is higher than the July 2006 seasonally adjusted estimate by 3.6%. |
2 | The August 2006 seasonally adjusted estimate of total vehicle sales is lower than the July 2006 seasonally adjusted estimate by 3.6%. |
The percentage change of 3.6% was chosen because the average absolute percentage change over the last 10 years has been 3.6%.
